Czechs complete Davis Cup sweep of Japan

Tokyo, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - Lukas Rosol and Jiri Vesely won dead rubbers Sunday to give the Czech Republic a sweep of their Davis Cup quarterfinal against Japan.

Rosol and Radek Stepanek led the Czechs to victory over the first two days, sweeping the opening singles matches on Friday and combining for a doubles win Saturday.

Playing for a third straight day, Rosol earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Yasutaka Uchiyama in the first reverse singles match Sunday before Vesely replaced Stepanek for the last match and claimed a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Taro Daniel.

"It was a tough match," said Rosol. "It was not easy for me. I was tired after the first two days."

This weekend's matchup was the first between the nations, although the former Czechoslovakia beat Japan in 1935 after the Japanese won the first meeting back in 1930.

The reigning two-time champion Czechs will face France in September's semifinals. The French rallied from an 0-2 deficit to pull off a 3-2 win over Germany this weekend.
