Mets' Murphy not in lineup, wife giving birth

Flushing, NY ( - The New York Mets starting second baseman Daniel Murphy is not in the Opening Day lineup as his wife is in labor with the couple's first child.

Murphy, who hit .313 with four RBI in 32 spring training at-bats, enters 2014 after a strong 2013. In 161 games a season ago, he hit .286 with 13 homers, 78 RBI and 92 runs scored. His 188 hits were second-best in the National League.

Without Murphy in the lineup the Mets are going with Eric Young Jr. at second and Juan Lagares in center field against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

In other lineup news for the Mets, expected starting outfielder Chris Young is out of the lineup due to the flu. Andrew Brown is starting in left field in his place.

Meanwhile, the battle for the starting first base job went to Ike Davis over Lucas Duda for the opener. Manager Terry Collins cited Davis' success against Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg as the reason. Davis is 4-for-11 with two homers lifetime against Strasburg.
