Hawks hope to rebound in trip to Washington

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Steve Miller Band wanted to fly like an eagle.

The Atlanta Hawks can't even fly like Hawks right now.

As time keeps on slipping into the future, the Hawks are losing ground in the playoff chase and will visit the Washington Wizards Saturday night. The Hawks are just two games ahead of the New York Knicks for the final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference and have lost five in a row since winning five straight.

Atlanta is coming off Thursday's 100-85 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and had to deal with the return of All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge. Aldridge had missed seven straight games with the Blazers and posted 25 points with 16 rebounds. Jeff Teague paced the Hawks with 22 points and Lou Williams added 16.

Elton Brand ended with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who are just 6-19 since Feb. 4.

"That's what we're looking for, one win, one break," said Brand. "We'll be fine. We have been playing hard. As long as we compete like we did all season long, we feel like the chips will favor us."

Kyle Korver missed his fifth consecutive game due to back spasms and his availability for Saturday is listed as unknown.

The Hawks are 11-26 away from home and will start a three-game homestand next week versus Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland.

The Wizards snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night with an impressive victory over the Eastern Conference's best team, the Indiana Pacers.

John Wall scored 20 points, Marcin Gortat had 17 points and 12 rebounds and the Wizards led wire-to-wire in a 91-78 victory over the Pacers on Friday night at Verizon Center.

Al Harrington added 12 points and Trevor Ariza and Martell Webster scored 11 each for the Wizards. The conference's current No. 6 seed stopped a two-game losing streak with their second win in six games.

"We just knew how big a game this was for us and we haven't been playing well the last six or seven games," said Wall. "Hopefully we understand the way we can win games and finish off teams is play defense, and that's what we did tonight."

Washington is 1 1/2 games behind the Brooklyn Nets and 2 1/2 games in front of the Charlotte Bobcats, who reside in seventh. The Wizards haven't made the postseason since the 2007-08 season.

Washington is 2-1 against Atlanta this season, but the Hawks have won seven of the last 10 games in this series between Southeast foes. Atlanta has won nine of its last 12 trips to Washington.
