Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution returns to the road on Saturday to meet the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Revs began the campaign with back-to-back away games that resulted in a pair of losses by a combined score of 5-0.

But after returning home to face Vancouver, New England finally claimed its first point of the season in a 0-0 draw.

The team has yet to score in three games, so there is some concern over the attacking prowess of the side, but head coach Jay Heaps was at least encouraged by the play of his defensive unit.

"Obviously, this has not been an ideal start," Heaps said of New England's first three games. "You go on the road for two difficult games, but we got home and I thought at least we put it together in some areas. We defended well, we didn't give away a ton. I thought our backline was really good tonight. Their chances were limited, I don't mind if we have that many more chances than the other team. I think in the end, we'll get more points. Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough."

New England will hope its fortunes away from Gillette Stadium improve as four of its first five games this season are on the road.

Last term the Revs put together the second best mark in MLS away from home with a 6-6-5 record, although Buck Shaw Stadium has proven to be a difficult ground with the Earthquakes winning four of the five meetings between the two teams in Santa Clara.

San Jose opened the campaign with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Real Salt Lake that saw the 'Quakes rally to score two goals in the final 15 minutes to overcome a 3-1 deficit.

But after being knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League on penalty kicks by Mexican side Toluca, San Jose sustained a 1-0 defeat at Sporting Kansas City to a second-half goal from Dom Dwyer.

Already this season San Jose head coach Mark Watson has had plenty of injuries in his team, and even if those players don't return to action this weekend, defender Clarence Goodson feels as though a full week of practice will be good for his side.

"I think it's going to be great to have a full week of training. We have had a lot of guys out. I think we will get a lot of guys back and even if we don't, it will be good to go through a full week of training with the guys that are playing together," said Goodson. "I think the guys have done a good job and stepped up, but to have a full week of training makes a world of difference and of course we are a different team in San Jose. We are looking forward to stepping high and putting them on their heels."

The Earthquakes will also hope to return to their 2012 form at home where the team lost just once and scored 43 goals in 17 games. Last season the 'Quakes lost only one time on home soil as well, but scored 20 fewer goals, so three goals scored in the opener for San Jose will be an encouraging sign.
