Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tiffany Mitchell posted 24 points and six rebounds as she helped lead the Lady Gamecocks of South Carolina to a 73-58 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Stanford Regional at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Alaina Coates gave top-seeded and eight-ranked South Carolina (28-4) a huge boost off the bench as she registered 13 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Elem Ibiam and Aleighsa Welch both delivered 11 points, the latter adding nine rebounds and three blocks as well.
The 16th-seeded Matadors (18-15) were led by Janae Sharpe and her game-high 26 points, but she was the only player in double figures for the squad before fouling out.
USC erupted for 55.6 percent shooting from the floor in the first half, but the team converted only 6-of-11 at the free-throw line and missed both chances beyond the arc in the period, leaving the Lady Gamecocks with a 36-26 edge at the break.
CSUN went from hitting on just 32.4 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes to 29.4 percent to close out the meeting.
In addition to owning a 52-36 advantage on the glass, South Carolina also outscored the Matadors at the charity stripe, 27-11.
With the victory, the Lady Gamecocks advance to the second round of the tournament on Tuesday night and will face an Oregon State squad which defeated Middle Tennessee, 55-36, in the first round.
