Keys, McHale roll; Duval loses at Sony Open

Key Biscayne, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Easy wins came for teenager Madison Keys and Christine McHale but Miami native Victoria Duval was a first-round loser Wednesday at the $5.4 million Sony Open.

Keys, 19, beat 18-year-old Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 6-2 in 63 minutes in the day's final match.

Earlier, fellow American McHale beat China's Zheng Jie 6-4, 6-2, while Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens handled the 18-year-old American wild card Duval 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Meanwhile, New York native Coco Vandeweghe, a qualifier this week, topped New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) on Day 2. The 22-year-old Vandeweghe is the niece of former NBA player and coach Kiki Vandeweghe.

In other action involving Americans, Vania King shut out Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-0, 6-0; Lauren Davis leveled China's Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-3; and Alison Riske bounced back to beat Ukraine's Nadiya Kichenok 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Wild card and former top-10 Russian Nadia Petrova held off Poland's Urszula Radwanska 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, while Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic took out Japanese qualifier Kimiko Date-Krumm 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Date-Krumm, 43, was a Miami runner-up 19 years ago.

Also advancing were French qualifier Virginie Razzano, Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova, Austrian qualifier Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Swedish wild card Rebecca Peterson, China's Peng Shuai, Argentina's Paula Ormaechea, Germany's Andrea Petkovic, Austria's Yvonne Meusburger, Czech Republic's Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic and Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas.

Govortsova will face last week's surprise Indian Wells champion Flavia Pennetta on Friday.

The winner of this lucrative event will collect $787,000.
