Dutch qualifier Kiki Bertens handled the 18-year-old American wild card Duval, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, on the hardcourts at Crandon Park.
In other action involving Americans, Vania King double-bageled Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela 6-0, 6-0 and Lauren Davis leveled Chinese Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-3.
Also advancing were French qualifier Virginie Razzano, Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova, Austrian qualifier Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Swedish wild card Rebecca Peterson, Chinese Peng Shuai, and Argentine Paula Ormaechea. Govortsova will face last week's surprise Indian Wells champion Flavia Pennetta on Friday.
The winner of this lucrative event will collect $787,000.
