Steve Donahue has been fired as Boston College's basketball coach after an 8-24 season. The Eagles failed to reach the NCAA tournament in his four years in the job.

Athletic director Brad Bates made the announcement Tuesday with one year left on the five-year contract Donahue signed to replace Al Skinner in 2010.

The Eagles finished this season with their most losses in 15 years, playing a more challenging nonconference schedule. BC was 54-76 under Donahue.

He was hired after taking Cornell to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2010. It was Cornell's third straight appearance in the tournament. But he took BC to just one postseason tournament, with the Eagles losing in the second round of the NIT in 2011.
