Lausanne, Switzerland (SportsNetwork.com) - Former Olympic cities Oslo and Beijing have formally submitted applications to host the 2022 Winter Games.
Joining Oslo and Beijing as official applicant cities were Krakow, Poland; Almaty, Kazakhstan and Lviv, Ukraine. The five cities faced a March 14 deadline with the International Olympic Committee.
Oslo hosted the 1952 Winter Games and fellow Norwegian town Lillehammer was the site for the 1994 Winter Olympics. Beijing held the 2008 Summer Games and is trying to become the first city to host the Summer and Winter Olympics.
The application files give the IOC an overview of each city's concept for the Games. An IOC group will review the applications and submit a report to the IOC's executive board, which will decide in July which of the five will become candidate cities.
Those official candidates will then be evaluated by the IOC before an election of the host city takes place on July 31, 2015.
Only three cities made bids for the next Winter Olympics in 2018, which were awarded to PyeongChang, South Korea.
