Azarenka upset in second round at Indian Wells

Indian Wells, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - American Lauren Davis stunned former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the second-round Friday at the $5.9 million BNP Paribas Open tennis event at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Davis needed just two sets to take down the third-seeded Azarenka, who had 12 double faults during the disappointing defeat. Davis won 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) to advance to face fellow American Varvara Lepchenko. Lepchenko took out 29th- seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-2. Hantuchova was the Indian Wells champion back in 2002.

Davis picked up her first ever top-25 win.

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was an easy second-round winner, as the former Wimbledon runner-up rolled past British qualifier Heather Watson 6-4, 6-3 at this lucrative hardcourt tournament.

Sixth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep defeated Hurumi Nara of Japan 6-2, 6-2, while 2010 Indian Wells champ and seventh-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic cruised past Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-3, 6-1.

Ninth-seeded former French Open runner-up Sara Errani of Italy moved on by dismantling Canadian qualifier Sharon Fichman 6-1, 6-1, while last year's runner-up and 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki trimmed Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-3. Wozniacki was the runner-up at this event last year and a winner in 2011.

Italian 13th-seeded Roberta Vinci had no trouble with Madison Keys, routing the American 6-3, 6-3, while 14th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro clipped France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 6-3, as well. Australian Open semifinalist and rising 18th-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard moved on by handling Chinese Peng Shuai 6-2, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Australian qualifier Casey Dellacqua upset 19th-seeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 1-6, 6-3, 6-1; 22nd-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet held off Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3, 4-6, 6-2; 24th-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi was upended by Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2; 26th-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova downed Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-4; German Annika Beck snuck past 30th-seeded Ukrainian Elena Vesnina 6-2, 3-6, 6-3; and 31st-seeded Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova dismissed American wild card Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-3.
