Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Monday he has been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer.
The Twins released a statement from Ryan on Monday, which said a routine physical revealed a lump in the GM's neck. He said a biopsy determined a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, but added that doctors believe it is treatable and has not spread past his neck.
Ryan made the announcement before the club heads to spring training and said he will not immediately join the club in Florida while he concentrates on his recovery.
"Understanding the need to focus on treatment and recovery, I will not be in Fort Myers as we commence spring training," said Ryan in the statement. "That said, I'm highly confident in the proven leadership of our baseball operations team including Rob Antony, Mike Radcliff, Ron Gardenhire and others as we collectively prepare for the 2014 Major League season."
Ryan will be treated at the Mayo Clinic and Minnesota Oncology.
