Pebble Beach, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker put together solid rounds in chilly, windy conditions on Friday and they moved into a share of the lead after two rounds of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Spieth carded a 4-under 67 on the par-71 Monterey Peninsula course, while Walker posted a 3-under 69 on the par-72 Spyglass Hill course on Friday. They stand at 9-under par and are one clear of the field.
Hunter Mahan shot 68 at Spyglass and moved into third place at minus-8. First- round leader Andrew Loupe stumbled to a 1-over 73 at Pebble Beach. Loupe fell into fourth place at minus-7.
Players rotate over the three courses with their amateur partners for the first three rounds, before competing at Pebble Beach for the final round.
Richard H. Lee (72) is alone in fifth place at 6-under 137.
Spieth started his second round on the 10th at Monterey and got off to a flying start as he birdied three of the first four holes to jump to minus-8.
After four pars in a row, Spieth faltered to a bogey on the par-4 18th. He bounced back with a birdie on the second, but coughed up another stroke on the par-4 fourth.
Spieth, the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, birdied the par-5 sixth to return to minus-8. He capped his round with another birdie on the ninth to gain a piece of the lead.
"It's cool to have a team event. We don't have them very often. I love any opportunity you get to have a teammate," said Spieth, who will start his third round on the first tee at Pebble Beach.
Walker, who has already won twice in the new wrap-around 2013-14 season, also started on the back nine Friday, and he ran off six consecutive pars from the 10th on Spyglass Hill.
At the par-4 16th, Walker finally got on the board as he made his first birdie of his round. That moved him to minus-7, and he remained there as he carded four straight pars around the turn.
Walker got to 8-under with a birdie on the par-3 third. He parred three in a row before posting the final birdie of his round at the par-5 seventh. Walker parred the final two holes to end at minus-9.
"I'm from Texas, I didn't play on this grass growing up, but I just enjoy it. I seem to play well out here," said Walker, who will start his third round on the first tee at Monterey. "A lot of times, pars are really good. You've got to stay real patient. I was tested really early today. I hit some poor shots and I did some serious scrambling."
Robert Garrigus (71) and Ryan Palmer (66) are among 11 players tied for sixth at minus-5. Four-time winner Phil Mickelson mixed four birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey in a round of 1-over 73. That left him tied for 17th at minus-4.
NOTES: Spieth earned his first tour win last year at the John Deere Classic, and this is the third time he has had at least a piece of the 36-hole lead on the PGA Tour ... Walker won the Frys.com to start the new wrap-around season and also won the Sony Open in Hawaii. Walker has a share of the 36-hole lead for the third time in his tour career ...
