Belgium stays alive against Kazakhstan in Davis Cup

Astana, Kazakhstan (SportsNetwork.com) - Belgium got a big doubles victory on Saturday to stay alive in its opening-round Davis Cup tie against host Kazakhstan, which still leads the best-of-five affair, 2-1.

Ruben Bemelmans and Olivier Rochus paired up to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin and Evgeny Korolev 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) on the indoor hardcourt at Astana's National Tennis Centre.

In Friday's opening singles, Kukushkin got the hosts going with a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bemelmans and Andrey Golubev made it a Day 1 sweep with a marathon 7-6 (11-9), 3-6, 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 decision over David Goffin in 4 hours, 38 minutes.

Sunday's deciding reverse singles will first pit Kukushkin against Goffin, followed by Golubev versus Bemelmans.

This is the first-ever Davis Cup meeting between these two nations.

The winner here will take on Switzerland in the quarterfinals in April.
