Auburn, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Former LPGA Tour player Danielle Downey died late Thursday evening from injuries suffered in a single car accident. She was 33 years old.
According to AL.com, Downey lost control of her car on Lee Road 57. Her vehicle left the roadway and overturned several times. Downey was ejected from the car.
She was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:58 p.m. from a massive head injury and multiple blunt force impact injuries.
Downey was a member of the LPGA Tour from 2006-10. Her best season was in 2008, when she posted a career-best finish of tied for fourth at the Bell Micro LPGA Classic and she also shared 14th at the SemGroup Championship.
"The LPGA Tour is deeply saddened about the passing of long-time member and friend, Danielle Downey who was killed in a single car accident last night in Auburn, Alabama. Danielle played on the LPGA Tour from 2006 through the 2010 season," the LPGA said in a statement. "Downey, originally from Rochester, N.Y., began her professional career on the Symetra Tour in 2003 and recorded seven top-10 finishes and a victory at the 2004 Lima Memorial FUTURES Golf Classic."
Prior to joining the LPGA, Downey was a three-time All American at Auburn. After her playing career ended, Downey caddied for a pair of LPGA players before returning to her alma mater.
Downey, who was the Director of Golf Operations at Auburn at the time of her death, stepped in when Auburn women's golf coach Kim Evans was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last season. Downey led the team to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championship, their best finish in the tournaments eight years.
"I'm absolutely devastated," said Evans, Auburn head women's golf coach. "Danielle meant so much to me, the girls and this program. Not only did she give much of her life to Auburn as a student-athlete and as a mentor to these young women, but she was so instrumental to this team during some tough times over the past year. Danielle was like a daughter to me."
