La Jolla, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stewart Cink fired an 8-under 64 Thursday to grab a 1-shot lead after the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Cink, who played the easier North Course at Torrey Pines, is still looking for his first win since the 2009 British Open.

Gary Woodland carded a 7-under 65 on the North Course and was in second place and Jason Day, Tyrone Van Aswegen, 2010 runner-up Marc Leishman and Jim Herman shared third place at minus-6.

Pat Perez had the low round of the day on the South Course with a 5-under 67 and was joined in seventh place by D.A. Points and Sang-Moon Bae.

Tiger Woods, who won this event for a seventh time last year, had two birdies and two bogeys on the South Course and opened with an even-par 72, which left him tied for 63rd.

Phil Mickelson, the back-to-back champion in 2000 and 2001, fought through a tight back for a 3-under 69 and was tied for 17th.

Woods, who won by four strokes last year, knocked in a short birdie putt on the second, but found sand with his approach at the fifth, leading to a bogey.

After five pars in a row, Woods dropped his tee shot on the par-3 11th into a greenside bunker and blasted to 10 feet, but 2-putted for bogey to slip to plus-1.

Woods got that shot back at 14, where he rolled in a birdie try from the front fringe, then parred the final four holes.

"Even-par is not too bad. I didn't play the par-5s worth a damn today, that's paramount on the South Course," Woods said. "I didn't do that, so consequently, I didn't finish under-par."

Mickelson, who started on No. 10 on the North Course, parred his first eight holes then birdied the 18th and first, both par-5s, to get to 2-under. After four more pars, Mickelson tripped to a bogey on the par-3 sixth.

At the seventh, Mickelson atoned for that mistake with a birdie. The British Open champion closed out his first round of the year on the PGA Tour with a birdie on the ninth.

"I just think I'm getting old. And if I overdo it, it just gets a little tight," Mickelson said of his sore back.

Cink, who has broken par in eight of his first nine rounds in 2014, got off to a fast start with three birdies in the first four holes. He cruised to the back nine with six straight pars from the fifth.

The six-time PGA Tour winner moved to 5-under with birdies at the 11th and 13th. Cink soared into the lead at minus-8 with three consecutive birdies from the 15th.

"I've been playing fairly well this year. I've been feeling confident, so I'm looking forward to the challenge (of the South Course)," Cink said. "It's a good golf course to test yourself and see where you stand this time of year."

NOTES: The start of the first round was delayed 30 minutes due to fog ... Cink is making his 12th start at this event, and his best finish was a share of third in 2008 ... Cink is 0-4 after holding the first-round lead.
