Huntsville, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - University of North Texas offensive coordinator Mike Canales is interviewing at Sam Houston State this week for the Bearkats' vacant head coach's position.
Sam Houston State athletic director Bobby Williams said Sunday there could be an additional coach added with the other four finalists: former Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler; former Northwest Missouri State head coach Mel Tjeersdma; Virginia offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim; and Texas co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt.
Under Canales, North Texas produced 5,336 yards offensively and went 9-4 this past season, winning the Heart of Texas Bowl on Jan. 1
Sam Houston State, a Southland Conference member, is coming a 9-5 season and its third straight appearance in the FCS playoffs. Willie Fritz resigned as the Bearkats' head coach earlier this month to become Georgia Southern's new head coach.
