Royals sign Penny, Mota to minor league deals

Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals have signed pitchers Brad Penny and Guillermo Mota to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Penny last pitched in the big leagues in 2012 with the San Francisco Giants, going 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA in 22 appearances out of the bullpen.

The 35-year-old Penny was an All-Star in 2006 and 2007 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning 16 games in each season.

In 341 career games (315 starts) with Florida (2000-04), the Dodgers (2004-08), Boston (2009), San Francisco (2009, 2012), St. Louis (2010) and Detroit (2011), Penny is 119-100 with a 4.26 ERA.

Mota last pitched in the majors in 2012 with the Giants, going 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA in 26 relief appearances.

The 40-year-old Mota is 39-45 with a 3.94 ERA in 743 career games with the Expos (1999-2001), Dodgers (2002-04, 2009), Marlins (2004-05), Indians (2006), Mets (2006-07), Brewers (2008) and Giants (2010-12).
