Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Czech Tomas Berdych and Frenchman Richard Gasquet were among the early second-round winners Wednesday at the Australian Open.
The seventh-seeded Berdych reached the third round at Melbourne Park for the fourth straight year with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 win over France's Kenny De Schepper on Hisense Arena.
Berdych's next opponent will be Damir Dzumhur, who moved on after Croat Ivan Dodig retired. Dzumhur fought back from two sets down and was leading 4-1 in the fourth set when the 32nd-seeded Dodig called it quits.
Gasquet, the ninth seed, also advanced in straight sets, topping former world No. 3 Russian Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4.
German Florian Mayer outlasted 14th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
