Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - A federal judge has withheld approval of the NFL's concussion settlement with former players, saying Tuesday she needs more information from both sides.
U.S. District Court Judge Anita Brody filed a decision Tuesday, saying she was unsure if the $765 million agreement reached would be sufficient.
An agreement was announced in August after nearly two months of negotiations under the supervision of mediator Layn Phillips, a former United States District Judge appointed to the case by Brody.
The proposal was set to provide medical benefits and injury compensation for retired NFL players or their families. It was also set to fund medical and safety research, and cover litigation expenses.
More than 4,500 former players, including Hall of Famers Tony Dorsett and Eric Dickerson, filed suit against the NFL. Those plaintiffs believed the NFL knew about the dangers of concussions and for years hid information from those who suffered such injuries during their careers.
