Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Defending national champions Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir secured the pairs title Saturday at the U.S. figure skating championships from TD Garden.
After the duo was awarded 73.13 points en route to winning the pairs short program Thursday, Castelli and Shnapir picked up 132.58 points for Saturday's free skate performance, bringing their total to 205.71 for the event.
The victory essentially sealed a spot in Sochi for the duo, though the announcement on the two U.S. pairs teams selected will be made Sunday.
Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay finished second with 201.72 points after earning 135.22 points for their free skate.
Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, the 2012 champs, returned after missing last year's nationals as Coughlin recovered from hip surgery. They finished in third with 201.43 points, despite posting the highest score on Saturday with 136.03 points.
