Hobart, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded long-time Aussie crowd favorite Sam Stosur eased into the semifinals at the Hobart International tennis event, a final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.
The former U.S. Open titlist handled eighth-seeded Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-3, 6-2 Thursday at Hobart International Tennis Centre.
A Day 5 upset came when Spaniard Garbine Muguruza took out second-seeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-3, while seventh-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova avoided an upset by besting American Alison Riske 6-4, 7-5.
Also in the round of eight, Spain's Estrella Cabeza Candela came from behind to beat Romanian Monica Niculescu 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Friday's semifinals will pit the 29-year-old former top-10 star Stosur against Zakopalova and Cabeza Candela versus her fellow countrywoman and fellow qualifier Muguruza.
