Juve brings emphatic end to Roma's unbeaten run

Turin, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Juventus handed Roma its first league defeat of the season on Sunday, a comprehensive 3-0 home victory that moves Juve eight points clear at the top of Serie A.

Roma began the season with 10 straight wins, but Juve's victory on Sunday matches that streak and puts the Old Lady in firm control of the league, making the club clear favorites to capture a third successive title.

Arturo Vidal fired Juve in front after 17 minutes, while Leonardo Bonucci doubled the lead shortly after the break.

Things fell apart for Roma in the 75th minute when Daniele De Rossi and Leandro Castan were both sent off in the span of one minute, leaving the visitors with nine men.

Mirko Vucinic capped the win by scoring from the penalty spot for Juventus, which has won 16 of its first 18 games in Serie A this season.

Carlos Tevez played provider on Vidal's goal when he slipped a pass into the six-yard box between two defenders that allowed the Chile international to tuck his shot inside the near post.

Roma was still very much in the game but was undone by a set piece in the 47th minute that saw Andrea Pirlo curl a free kick to the back post where the unmarked Bonucci slid in to score from a few yards.

Frustration got the best of De Rossi in the 75th when he saw a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Juve's Giorgio Chiellini, while the ensuing free kick saw Castan sent off after handling the ball on the goal line.

Vucinic sent goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis the wrong way from the spot and there was certainly no way back for Roma at that point.

Also on Sunday, Cagliari squandered a good chance to claim three points at Chievo when Mauricio Pinilla failed to convert a 66th-minute penalty kick, forcing the two sides to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Fiorentina maintained its place in the top four in Sunday's other contest as the Viola topped Livorno, 1-0, with Gonzalo Rodriguez heading home the lone goal midway through the second half.
