Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Drew Stubbs to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for pitcher Josh Outman, the club announced Wednesday.
Stubbs, who stole 30 bases or more in three straight years with the Cincinnati Reds from 2010-12, batted .233 with 10 home runs, 45 RBI and 17 steals in 146 games with the Indians last season. Cleveland had deemed him expendable after signing free agent David Murphy earlier in the offseason to serve as the club's primary right fielder.
The Rockies, on the other hand, had an opening in center field, where Stubbs started at least 120 games over his final three seasons with the Reds, following their recent trade of Dexter Fowler to the Houston Astros.
Stubbs owns a .239 average with 69 homers, 223 RBI and 127 steals over five major league seasons. His best year came with the Reds in 2010, when the Texas product hit .255 and set personal bests of 22 homers and 77 RBI.
Outman posted a 3-0 record with a 4.33 earned run average over 61 games as a specialist for the Rockies a year ago, limiting lefty hitters to a .198 average.
The 29-year-old has pitched in 121 games, all but 32 of which have come in relief, over five seasons in the majors and compiled a 12-11 mark with a 4.61 ERA. Outman broke into the big leagues with Oakland in 2008 and was acquired by the Rockies from the A's in January of 2012.
