Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox officially ended Andrew Bailey's injury-plagued and disappointing two-year tenure with the club on Monday, with the reigning World Series champs announcing they will not offer the former All-Star closer a contract for the upcoming season.
Bailey recorded at least 24 saves in three straight seasons with the Oakland Athletics prior to being acquired by the Red Sox in December of 2011. However, the 2009 American League Rookie of the Year posted a brutal 7.04 earned run average while missing a large portion of his first season in Boston due to a ligament tear in his thumb, then pitched in only 30 games last year before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in July.
The right-hander recorded eight saves and a 3.77 ERA over 28 2/3 innings prior to being shelved.
Boston also non-tendered outfielder Ryan Kalish, who missed the entire 2013 season recovering from surgeries to his shoulder and neck.
