Antwan Burrus had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Liberty earned its first Division I win of the season 70-53 over Hampton in the Corpus Christi Challenge on Friday.
Liberty (2-5) took a 13-12 on Burris' free throw with 9:47 left in the first half. It opened a 9-2 run and the Flames steadily built their lead from there.
Burris led Liberty's dominance in the paint. The Flames outrebounded Hampton 46-24 and outscored the Pirates 36-20 in the paint. John-Caleb Sanders added 15 points and seven assists.
Du'Vaughn Maxwell led Hampton (2-5) with 17 points and three blocks. The Pirates could not overcome 18 turnovers and were only 2 of 12 from 3-point range. Hampton has lost five straight games.
Liberty will be in action tomorrow against the winner of Sam Houston State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff while Hampton will play the loser in the consolation game.
