St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Seeking an offensive upgrade at the shortstop position, the St. Louis Cardinals signed free agent Jhonny Peralta to a four-year contract on Sunday.
Peralta, 31, batted .303 with 11 homers, 30 doubles and 55 RBI for the Detroit Tigers in 2013. He also served a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.
"We are pleased to announce that Jhonny has agreed to terms and I know he is equally excited to be joining the Cardinals,"Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. "Jhonny is among the game's top offensive shortstops, he's a steady defender and he has experience playing for a contender. He gives us proven veteran experience and brings balance and versatility to our everyday lineup."
Peralta is a career .268 hitter with 156 homers, 295 doubles and 698 RBI in 1,383 games with Cleveland and Detroit.
