Mexican flags with a marijuana leaf displayed outside two McLaren team stores at the U.S. Grand Prix prompted a complaint from the Mexico consulate. The team removed the flags and apologized.

McLaren said in a statement the flags next to a merchandise stall at the Circuit of the Americas were not authorized or manufactured by the team. The statement blamed a third-party contractor it did not identify.

The Mexican consulate in Austin complained about the flags to Formula One on Friday and demanded they be removed.

McLaren is one of two teams that have Mexican drivers this season. But McLaren said this week it will not bring back Sergio Perez in 2014 after a disappointing season, his first with the team.
