Ellsbury, Napoli get qualifying offers

Boston, MA ( - Three key members of the Boston Red Sox' 2013 world champion team received qualifying offers prior to Monday's deadline, with the club extending one-year bids to center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, first baseman Mike Napoli and shortstop Stephen Drew.

All three have until Nov. 11 to accept the $14.1 million tender for next season, with the Red Sox receiving compensatory picks between the first and second round of next year's First-Year Player Draft if they sign with another team.

Ellsbury is likely to decline, as the speedy outfielder is expected to command a significant multi-year deal on the market after batting .298 with nine home runs, 53 RBI and a American League-leading 52 steals last season. The 30-year- old owns a career .297 average and has swiped 35 bases or more in four of his seven big league campaigns.

Napoli, signed to a one-year contract by Boston this past offseason, became a major contributor to the Red Sox' title run by belting 23 homers and 92 RBI in 139 games. The converted catcher has hit 20 or more home runs in six consecutive seasons.

Drew also signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox prior to last season and hit .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBI while supplying strong defense at shortstop.

Boston did not tender a qualifying offer to starting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia or relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan, who pitched in just nine games before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.
