Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera underwent surgery on Tuesday.
The Tigers announced on Twitter that the slugger had "successful core muscle repair surgery."
Cabrera will undergo rehab for the next 6-to-8 weeks and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Dr. Bill Meyers performed the procedure in Philadelphia, PA.
Cabrera was hurt for most of the month of September and was clearly hampered by the injury during the postseason. He batted just .262 in 11 games and had only two homers with seven runs batted in as the Tigers lost to Boston in the American League Championship Series.
After winning the Triple Crown in 2012, Cabrera again won the AL batting title this season with an MLB-best average of .348. His 44 homers and 137 RBI were second to Baltimore's Chris Davis, who had 53 home runs and 138 RBI.
Cabrera's power numbers declined in the final month due to the injury, as he hit just one homer and drove in only seven runs in September.
