SHANGHAI – Luke Guthrie kept his distance in the BMW Masters with a 1-under 71 to take a four-shot lead into the weekend in his first trip to Asia.
The American never let anyone get closer than two shots on another blustery day at Lake Malaren with much colder temperatures. Wearing short sleeves for most of Friday, Guthrie survived a rough patch. He made an 18-foot par putt on the ninth hole and picked up three birdies on the back nine. His round ended with a poor pitch that led to bogey on the 18th.
He was at 8-under 134. Guthrie was four shots ahead of six players, including Paul Casey and Thongchai Jaidee.
John Daly couldn't make a putt in his round of 74. He was six shots behind.
