Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United climbed six points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference on Saturday as Luis Silva's goal in the 10th minute was enough to lift United to a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union at RFK Stadium.
Silva struck after 10 minutes to put United ahead, and the hosts held out for the remaining 80 minutes to climb six points clear of Sporting Kansas City and New England.
The Union, meanwhile, saw their five-game unbeaten streak ended, leaving the club two points out of a playoff spot.
Chris Korb set up the goal when he got into the box on the right and sent a chip to the front of goal that saw Silva get up and turn a header past goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi.
Carlos Valdes kept the Union within a goal in the 27th minute when he cleared two shots off the goal line in quick succession with Fabian Espindola sliding a shot past Mbolhi that Valdes saved before the Colombian blocked the rebound attempt from Silva.
The Union struggled to seriously test United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, and the best chance the visitors had came 11 minutes from time when Maurice Edu sent a dipping shot on target from 30 yards that Hamid fumbled. However, he was able to recover in time to pounce on the loose ball ahead of the Union's Danny Cruz.
