After considering retirement the last few months, quarterback David Garrard has re-signed with the New York Jets to serve as a veteran backup and mentor to rookie Geno Smith.

The team announced Thursday that Garrard has been placed on the exempt list, but is eligible to practice and attend meetings. Garrard, who signed with New York in March before leaving because of a balky knee in May, will be on the exempt list for two games.

Garrard says his knee feels "great." If he proves to be healthy, Garrard could be activated for the team's game at Cincinnati on Oct. 27.

With Mark Sanchez opting for season-ending surgery this week, Brady Quinn remained the only experienced backup behind Smith. The signing of Garrard leaves Quinn's future with the team uncertain.
