A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the Philadelphia Flyers have fired coach Peter Laviolette.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision was not announced. The Flyers have scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference.

Laviolette was fired with the flyers off to an 0-3 start a year after they missed the playoffs. Laviolette was hired early in the 2009 season after John Stevens was fired and he led them to the 2010 Stanley Cup finals. Laviolette has previously coached the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders.
