Shanghai, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Seeds Tommy Haas and John Isner were among Monday's opening-round winners at the $3.85 million Shanghai Masters tennis event.
The 11th-seeded 35-year-old Haas handled big-serving American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 in 62 minutes, while the 14th-seeded 6-foot-9 Isner fired 29 aces in overcoming Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in 2 hours, 17 minutes on the hardcourts at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.
Also on Day 2, Spaniard Marcel Granollers topped former top-10 star Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-4 and another former top-10 performer, Gael Monfils, drubbed Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-2 on a rainy day in Shanghai.
Several seeds will take to the courts for first-round matches on Tuesday, including U.S. Open semifinalist Richard Gasquet, last week's Tokyo runner-up and recent Bangkok titlist Milos Raonic, and Japan's Kei Nishikori.
This week's field is highlighted by reigning champion Novak Djokovic and 2009 Shanghai runner-up Rafael Nadal. Djokovic beat the new world No. 1 Nadal on Sunday in the final at the China Open in Beijing.
Djokovic, who beat Andy Murray in last year's Shanghai finale, will meet Granollers in the round of 32.
