As September turns to October, the typical attrition that inflicts NFL rosters is well underway. And Wednesday brought with it plenty of updates, with the news good for some teams, and downright dreadful for others:

- Packers RB James Starks will miss this week's home against Detroit with an injured knee, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. According to the report, coach Mike McCarthy said of Starks, "I would put him in the category of a couple of weeks." In Week 2, Starks became the first Green Bay running to rush for at least 100 yards in a game since October of 2010, going for 132 yards against Washington. The next week at Cincinnati, Starks was injured in the team's 34-30 loss. The team was holding out hope the Week 4 bye week would be enough time for Starks to heal.

- The Chiefs may be unbeaten but they are not immune from the injury bug. On Wednesday, Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles was one of five players to miss practice . The team expects Charles, dealing with blisters on his feet, to play against Tennessee on Sunday. Also out were No. 1 pick OL Eric Fisher (concussion), CB Brandon Flowers (knee inflammation), S Kendrick Lewis (sprained ankle) and P Dustin Colquitt (knee).

- Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer underwent successful microfracture surgery on his left knee Tuesday. The free-agent-to-be is on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season. He had played in only game this season, recording two tackles in a Week 2 loss to Kansas City.

- The Broncos received a scare at practice when LB Danny Trevathan (he of the infamous dropped TD on the 1-yard line on opening night) was carted off the field with a knee injury late in the session. But later in the day the team learned the injury was not serious and said he will likely be listed as questionable Sunday at Dallas. Trevathan even took to Twitter to show he was OK.

I'm good! Thanks for all of your concerns #BroncosUp

If he suffers no setback, Pryor is expected to start this week against San Diego. In Pryor's absence the club turned to Matt Flynn -- the man Pryor supplanted as starter -- against Washington in Week 4. Flynn was so bad (21 0f 32, 227 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT -- returned for TD, 3 fumbles -- 2 lost) in a 24-14 loss) that he was demoted to No. 3 on the depth chart on Wednesday.
