Carson, CA – Chris Wondolowski's strike three minutes from time kept the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes playoff chances alive on Sunday as the club earned a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA at the StubHub Center.
San Jose entered the match in seventh place in the Western Conference on 41 points, four behind the fifth-place Colorado Rapids for the final playoff berth, but the Quakes struggled for much of the match.
After going down a man nine minutes from time when Steven Lenhart was shown a second yellow card, last season's Golden Boot winner came up huge for his club in the 87th minute when a drive by Marvin Chavez was spilled by Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy and Wondolowski was there to pound home the rebound.
With four minutes of stoppage time shown on the fourth official's board, Chivas had some life, but the Goats were unable to produce an equalizer as the 'Quakes came away with a critical three points.
The result pulls San Jose to within one point of Colorado for fifth place with three matches remaining, while Chivas remains at the foot of the West on 26 points.
