Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez tossed a no-hitter Sunday afternoon and a day later, was recognized as the National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 29.

Alvarez fired the third no-hitter of the 2013 campaign in the Marlins' 1-0 season finale victory against Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The 23-year-old struck out four while walking one and hitting a batsmen in the no-hit effort, and led the majors with 16 innings pitched over his last two starts to finish his third big league season at 5-6 with a 3.59 ERA.

The performance on Sunday marked the fifth no-hitter in Marlins franchise history and Alvarez became the first pitcher in major league history to complete the feat on a walk-off wild pitch.
