White Sox, Royals set for season finale

Colombian-born southpaw Jose Quintana can close out his second major-league season with double-digit wins on Sunday when the Chicago White Sox host the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

The 24-year-old debuted with the White Sox in 2012 and won six of 12 decisions across 25 appearances (22 starts) before making the transition to full-time starter this season.

He picked up his eighth and ninth wins of the year by defeating Minnesota and Toronto, 4-3 and 3-2, in his last two starts while allowing three runs on 13 hits in 13 1/3 innings.

Quintana last faced the Royals on Aug. 22 in Kansas City and got a no-decision in a game the White Sox won, 4-3. He allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings of work.

In seven career starts against the Royals, he is 0-2 with a 3.95 earned run average.

For Kansas City, veteran Bruce Chen makes his 218th start in his 385th appearance while seeking career win No. 80.

The 36-year-old was beaten 4-0 in his most recent start on Sept. 24 in Seattle and gave up all four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.

He's 6-5 in 22 career meetings with the White Sox with a 3.71 ERA in 111 2/3 innings, while walking 34 batters, striking out 78 and permitting an opposition batting average of .242.

Chen is 3-3 in 15 road appearances in 2013.

On Saturday, Chicago clubbed four home runs as the White Sox took down the Royals 6-5.

Marcus Semien, Jordan Danks, Adam Dunn and Conor Gillaspie all went deep for Chicago, which improved to 10-8 against the Royals this season.

Erik Johnson (3-2) struck out four over 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. The young righty has won three straight starts.

Kansas City also scored all of its runs via the long ball, with Mike Moustakas, Billy Butler and Salvador Perez all delivering home runs.

Yordano Ventura (0-1) was tagged for four runs on six hits, including three homers, in four innings of work.

Kansas City won the 2012 season series with Chicago 12-6.
