Atlanta Braves starting catcher Brian McCann strained his right groin on Thursday and he could miss up to a week of action.

McCann left Thursday's 7-1 win over the Phillies with the injury. He could return as early as this weekend, but may be out until the start of the postseason.

McCann is hitting .256 with 20 homers and 57 RBI in 102 games this season.

In other Braves news, starting pitcher Brandon Beachy had surgery on his pitching elbow Thursday and the right-hander expects to be back for the 2014 season.

Beachy had particles that were causing discomfort removed by Dr. James Andrews. He faces three months of rehab.

Beachy, who underwent Tommy John surgery last year, made his return to the mound on July 29 and went 2-1 with a 4.50 earned run average over five starts. However, he was placed on the disabled list at the end of August with the discomfort in his elbow after noticing a dip in his velocity.
