Red Bull New York moved three points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference on Sunday as an own goal from FC Dallas midfielder Erick in the 76th minute was the difference in a 1-0 New York win at Red Bull Arena.
The game was scrappy at times and didn't produce much in the way of quality scoring chances, but the result is an important one for the Red Bulls, while Dallas remains in eighth place in the Western Conference, five points back in the race for the final playoff spot.
New York nearly opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Eric Alexander's shot was parried by goalkeeper Raul Fernandes straight into New York's Tim Cahill, who redirected it off the post.
Fabian Castillo had the best chance for FC Dallas in the first half when he got into the area on the left and tried to curl the ball inside the far post, only for New York goalkeeper Luis Robles to make the save.
Thierry Henry should have done better with Fabian Espindola's cross in the 63rd minute, but he headed the ball wide of the net from six yards.
Finally the goal came with 14 minutes to play as Jonny Steele arrived at the back post and volleyed the ball back across the face of goal. Erick was tracking back and attempted to clear the cross, but he slipped and redirected the ball into his own net.
New York has now won its last four games and moves one point clear of Seattle in the race for the Supporters' Shield.
