The Washington Capitals will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic.

Capitals owner Ted Leonsis made the announcement Saturday to start the club's annual convention.

"We are extremely excited to host the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and bring this great event to the D.C. area," said Leonsis. "Our great fan base deserves to experience the magnificence of an outdoor game. We are thrilled to once again be part of this great event."

The league's showcase game will take place on New Year's Day 2015 against a yet to be determined opponent. The site also has not been decided, although Nationals Park and RFK Stadium are under consideration.

"The excitement of the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic continues to grow, and bringing the 2015 event to the D.C. area will write another chapter in the game's great history of entertainment," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement. "We are looking forward to being in Washington with the Capitals' great fans."

The Capitals participated in the 2011 Winter Classic, beating the Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field.
