The University of Hartford signed head men's basketball coach John Gallagher to a four-year extension through the 2017-18 season, the school announced Wednesday.

Gallagher guided the Hawks to the program's first-ever postseason appearance last season, an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com tournament, along with a 17-14 overall record that included a 10-6 mark in America East play. The 17 wins tied a school record for victories in a single campaign.

"We are extremely confident in the direction of our men's basketball program and we're excited to see what Coach Gallagher and his staff can build in the future," said Hartford athletics director Pat Meiser. "The success we had this season along with what we have returning next year is very encouraging. I am pleased with the level of competitiveness and am confident that will only continue to rise."

Gallagher, who previously served as the Hawks' associate head coach from 2006-08 before a two-year stint as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania, has compiled a 37-56 record in three seasons at Hartford. The Hawks have gone 24-24 in the America East over that span.
