Bo Pelini has apologized after audio surfaced Monday of the Nebraska football coach going on a profane rant against fans and reporters after a 2011 game.
Pelini, Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman and Cornhuskers athletic director Shawn Eichorst issued statements hours after Deadspin.com posted the audio online.
Deadspin said it received the audio from a tipster who said the recording was made Oct. 8, 2011, after the Cornhuskers came back from 21 points down to beat Ohio State.
In it, Pelini uses expletives to express his apparent frustrations with fans and reporters.
"I want to sincerely apologize for my comments from two years ago which became public today," Pelini said in his statement. "I take full responsibility for these comments. They were spoken in a private room following the Ohio State game.
"I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment. That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings. I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great university and fan base. I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended."
Deadspin says the recording was made before Pelini's postgame radio interview. The 1-minute, 42-second clip was posted two days after Nebraska's 41-21 loss to UCLA on Saturday.
In it, Pelini says about Cornhuskers fans: "It took everything in my power to not say, '[Expletive] you, fans. [Expletive] all of you.' [Expletive] 'em."
A man, identified by the website as radio host Greg Sharpe of the Husker Sports Network, says a lot of fans left at halftime of the Ohio State game (when Nebraska trailed 20-6). An unidentified woman begins to say fans returned to their seats.
Pelini replies: "Our crowd. What a bunch of [expletive] fair-weather [expletive] ... they can all kiss my a-- out the [expletive] door. Because the day is [expletive] coming now. We'll see what they can do when I'm [expletive] gone. I'm so [expletive] pissed off."
The Nebraska coach also had choice words to say about two reporters, using the same type of profane language.
Deadspin points out that Pelini seemed not to know he was being recorded.
"I am aware of the publication of coach Pelini's comments," Perlman said. "I am disappointed and in discussions with Shawn Eichorst about addressing the issue."
Said Eichorst: "I am disheartened and disappointed by the 2011 comments published today attributed to coach Pelini about our dedicated and passionate fans and supporters. I have spoken with Chancellor Perlman and I have addressed the situation with Bo and expressed our deep concern."
Pelini is 51-21 in six-plus seasons as the Nebraska coach. In 2009, he signed a contract extension through the 2014 season.
