Mets rely on Gee in finale with Marlins

Two victories shy of matching a personal best in a season, Dillon Gee aims to rebound on the mound Sunday for the New York Mets as they conclude a four-game set with the Miami Marlins.

Gee has been solid in his third full season as a member of the Mets' rotation, going 11-10 with a 3.61 earned run average in 29 starts. His ERA is on pace to be his best of that three-year span and he still has a chance at matching the 13 victories he posted in 2011.

The right-hander, though, has alternated wins and losses over his last five outings and is coming off a 6-3 setback to Washington on Tuesday. He allowed four runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings, just the second time in his last eight outings he yielded more than two runs.

"Obviously, I wasn't commanding the ball as well as I have been," the 27-year- old Gee said. "You can't get away with that against these guys. They made me pay."

Gee has faced the Marlins just once this year and escaped with a 7-6 road win on May 1 after giving up four runs over five innings. He is 2-0 lifetime versus Miami with a 4.50 ERA in three meetings.

The Marlins counter with 27-year-old Tom Koehler, who is without a victory since beating the Mets on Aug. 1. He hurled six scoreless frames in a 3-0 win on that day, but had to work around five hits and five walks while throwing a season-high 113 pitches.

Koehler, who is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six career meetings (3 starts) versus the Marlins, has gone 0-4 with a 5.89 ERA in his last seven outings and yielded four runs on eight hits and three walks over five frames of a 4-3 setback to Atlanta on Tuesday.

The righty is 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA in 26 games (20 starts) this season.

Despite taking two of the first three in this set, the Mets' 3-0 loss in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader clinched the club's fifth straight losing campaign. They managed just four hits as Miami's Henderson Alvarez hurled seven scoreless innings.

New York secured the split of the doubleheader behind Daisuke Matsuzaka, who tossed seven solid innings for a 3-1 victory, his first win since Aug. 27, 2012.

The Mets won for the fourth time in 14 games this month, while the Marlins have lost seven of their past nine.

Miami does lead the season series 11-7.
