Red Bull New York took over sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena.
Thierry Henry's ninth goal of the campaign in the 32nd minute put New York in front, and Fabian Espindola came off the bench to score the second goal for the Red Bulls 10 minutes from time, moving the club three points clear at the top of the conference.
Toronto had the better of the play in the opening half hour, but Henry put the home side ahead after nice ball from Dax McCarty, allowing him to beat goalkeeper Joe Bendik with a composed finish.
Bendik kept his side within a goal in the 67th after he produced a fine stop on New York's Bradley Wright-Phillips, but he was unable to keep out Espindola's effort 10 minutes from time.
The forward entered the match for Wright-Phillips and he made an immediate impact with a tight-angle header that snuck inside the far post.
Toronto is winless in its last seven games and has been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
