Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil outlasted the Serbian duo of Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac in a five-set thriller to lift Canada to the brink of the Davis Cup final.
Nestor and Pospisil rallied for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8 win on Saturday to give the Canadians a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five Davis Cup semifinal.
Canada needs just one victory in Sunday's reverse singles to reach the final against the defending champion Czech Republic. The Czechs advanced Saturday with a doubles victory for an insurmountable 3-0 edge in their semifinal against Argentina.
Milos Raonic will get the first opportunity to win it for Canada. He beat Janko Tipsarevic in a five-set marathon on Friday for Canada's first point of the tie, but will have to beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to do it. Djokovic thumped Pospisil in 100 minutes in the first of Friday's opening singles rubbers.
Saturday's match was tight from the start, with Canada squandering a 6-3 lead in the first-set tiebreaker. Serbia won five straight points to steal the set, but the Canadians broke Zimonjic in the second set and the third went in favor of the Serbs thanks to a break of Nestor.
However, the Canadians fought back from an 0-2 deficit in the fourth-set tiebreaker to force a deciding set with no tiebreakers. Neither team mustered a single break point in the fifth until a Zimonjic backhand into the net gave the Canadians a 9-8 advantage. Pospisil held in the final game to win it for the visitors.
