Jimenez remains on top at KLM Open

Zandvoort, The Netherlands – Miguel Angel Jimenez carded a 3- under 67 on Friday to maintain a share of the lead following two rounds of the KLM Open.

Jimenez, who is coming off a tie for fifth at the European Masters, finished 36 holes at Kennemer Golf & Country Club at 9-under-par 131. Two-time European Tour winner Pablo Larrazabal shot a 4-under 66 to meet him there.

"It's always good, we spend many practice rounds together, maybe 95 percent we play together," Larrazabal said about being paired with his fellow Spaniard on Saturday. "We know each other well and have a lot of fun. We have a lot of dinners together."

Simon Dyson tied the low round of the day with a 7-under 63 to jump into a share of third place with Julien Quesne (65) and Oliver Fisher (65) at 8-under 132, while David Drysdale (64) grabbed sole possession of sixth at 7-under.

Jorge Campillo also shot 63 to move into a tie for seventh with Anthony Snobeck (66), Matthew Nixon (65) and Joost Luiten (65) at minus-6.

Jimenez started on the back nine and surrounded a birdie at the 14th with eight pars to make the turn at 7-under.

He then opened his inward nine with two more pars before rolling in consecutive birdies at the third and fourth to move to 9-under. Jimenez closed out his round by parring his final five holes to remain there.

"This course suits me," said Jimenez. "It's not a very long course but you have to have the ball in position."

Jimenez maintained sole possession of the lead until Larrazabal raced to the top of the leaderboard with four birdies in a five-hole span from the third.

Larrazabal's streak ended with a bogey at the eighth, which dropped him a shot off the pace, but he bounced back with birdies at the 10th and 12th to reach 10-under and claim the outright lead.

After parring the next three holes, he tripped to a bogey at the 16th to fall back into a tie with Jimenez. Larrazabal parred his final two holes to remain there.

NOTES: Jimenez became the oldest winner in European Tour history when he captured the Hong Kong Open title in 2012 at the age of 48 years and 318 days ... Larrazabal's last victory on tour came at 2011 BMW International Open ... The cut line fell at 2-under 138, with 65 players advancing to the weekend ... Matteo Manassero, who is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 30, made the cut on the number.
