Rex Ryan insists it's realistic that Mark Sanchez could recover in time from a shoulder injury to play for the New York Jets this season.
Sanchez, hurt in the team's third preseason game, is rehabilitating his shoulder rather than immediately having season-ending surgery. The exact nature of the injury has not been revealed, although some published reports say it is a torn labrum. He threw passes left-handed before the Jets' 13-10 loss to the Patriots on Thursday night.
In an interview with NFL Network before the game, Sanchez said he was disappointed by the injury because he felt he undoubtedly beat out rookie Geno Smith for the starting job.
Ryan, during a conference call Friday, says he never declared a winner and that Sanchez's comments are simply "his opinion."
