Indianapolis, IN – Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano announced Friday that running back Vick Ballard will need season-ending surgery for a torn right ACL.
Pagano said the non-contact injury took place during Thursday's practice when Ballard lost his footing on a running play. Ballard will be placed on injured reserve.
Ballard carried the ball 13 times for 63 yards in last Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders. The Mississippi State product rushed for a team-high 814 yards with two touchdowns in 2012.
With Ballard lost for the year, Ahmad Bradshaw and Donald Brown will carry the load in the backfield.
Bradshaw, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Giants, rushed for over 1,000 yards twice during his six-year stint with New York. The Marshall product is in his first season with the Colts.
The 1-0 Colts play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
