The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Ron Hainsey on Thursday.

Hainsey, 32, spent last season with the Winnipeg Jets, compiling 13 assists over 74 games in his 10th NHL season.

"Ron is an experienced, two-way defenseman," Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He was very interested in joining our team this summer, and was patient as we waited for updated information about Joni Pitkanen's injury. We are happy to be able to solidify our defense with a player of this caliber at this stage."

Selected 13th overall by the Canadiens in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Hainsey has posted 34 goals and 158 assists in 591 career games with Montreal, Columbus, Atlanta and Winnipeg.
